چکیده

LabRatTM is an autonomous, self-contained mobile robot kit with batteries, motors, two bumper whisker sensors, and three infrared proximity sensors that double as channels for "Rat-to-Rat" communication. The LabRatTM design is completely open source, including software examples and libraries. LabRatTM is designed to fit inside the body of a computer mouse and has applications in the classroom, the lab and the home.

TeRK: A Flexible Tool for Science and Technology Education

We present TeRK, a new contribution to the field of educational robotics. TeRK combines a highly functional, low cost controller, the Qwerk, with an extensive software infrastructure and lively web community to lower the barrier to entry for students, hobbyists, artists and researchers interested in using robotic technologies. We further describe our experiences in applying TeRK to engage and e...

Smartphone Based Robotics: Powerful, Flexible and Inexpensive Robots for Hobbyists, Educators, Students and Researchers

In this manuscript, we survey the new and exciting approach of Smartphone based robotics for research and education. The increases in the computational power and sensing of smartphones, plus the recent availability of interface boards, have made this trend popular across a wide range of enthusiasts. As an example, we show how we built an Android based robotic platform composed of an Android pho...

Integrating ROS into Educational Robotics: Bridging the Gap between Grade School and Grad School

Robots and robot competitions have been used throughout the entire STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) education pipeline [8]. However, a gap has been identified in the focus and reinforcement of educational robotics concepts between K-12 and higher education [3]; for example, K-12 robot competitions tend to focus more on open-loop, reactive, and/or rule-based solutions with limit...

Modular Development of Mobile Robots with Open Source Hardware and Software Components

Prototyping and engineering robot hardware and low-level control often require time and efforts thus subtracted to core research activities, such as SLAM or planning algorithms development, which need a working, reliable, platform to be evaluated in a real world scenario. In this paper, we present Rapid Robot Prototyping (R2P), an open source, hardware and software architecture for the rapid pr...

Ono , a DIY Open Source Platform for Social Robotics

This paper describes the current status of Ono, an open source social robot that can be made using DIY tools and techniques. We believe that low-cost open source social robots provide advantages that current high-end robots do not have: they are well suited for large-scale studies and they are accessible for students and hobbyists. We describe the main parts of the current prototype: the module...
